Runzas

For those of you not from Nebraska and wondering about a Nebraska tradition, here’s the story behind the great Runza. Just to be clear I do like a Runza, but it is best with a cold Pepsi (I’m more of a Coke fab but with a Runza, Pepsi will do) and nice crispy onion rings (if you’re a fry person, their’s are the crinkle variety). You can get them stuffed with different things like mushrooms and Swiss cheese or even just American cheese. My favorite is the original Runza without ketchup (put that on the onion rings/fries only). If the original is good, why put extra stuff on it to be fancy?? I guess I’m a purest when it comes to the Runza.

I usually make them at least once a year, during football season when I’m not able to get back to Nebraska. But this year, I’ll be having my first one in almost a year hopefully real soon. I’ll be dreaming Runza tonight. The article from the Omaha World Herald is perfect timing.
