COVID-19 empties the shelter
On a positive note, COVID-19 cleared the shelter! That’s right, Pinellas County animal shelters no longer have dogs available for adoptions.
I never would have guessed the virus would lead to this, but people are home and often depressed during this social distancing and it’s great to see people are reaching out and adopting a four legged friend. Dogs provide unconditional love and since there is currently no reason to believe the virus can be spread to dogs, it’s a great solution to the craziness today.
If you are thinking to adopt a pet during the isolation times, please keep in mind that our lives are expected to get back to ‘normal’ and when they do, please do not abandon the friend that got you through the tough times. Remember when you adopt, they become part of your family.
Below is a recent post from Pinellas County Florida.
Pinellas shelter adopts all shelter dogs.
No dogs are currently sheltering at Pinellas County Animal Services during the COVID-19 pandemic as local residents have dramatically increased adoptions in the past several weeks.
Dog kennels at the county’s animal shelter were completely empty as of Monday evening.
“For the first time in years at Pinellas County Animal Services, our dog adoption program is completely adopted out,” said Animal Services Director Doug Brightwell.
“That’s thanks to the community and the hard work of our volunteers and our staff.”
Scores of citizens have stepped up to adopt a new furry friend to keep them company as the county and state remain under a Safer at Home Order. Pet adoption services are considered an essential business under Governor DeSantis’ executive order.
As more dogs come in to the shelter in the coming days, Brightwell encourages more residents to consider adoptions.
